Privacy Policy

UK Street Insight · Effective 23 October 2026 (version 2)

This policy explains what information the UK Street Insight app (“the app”, “we”, “us”) uses, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the app on iPhone and iPad (App Store) and on Android (Google Play). We have designed the app to collect as little as possible: there is no account, no sign-in, and we do not run our own servers.

In short

1. Who we are

UK Street Insight is developed by Global Man Ltd, the data controller for the limited information described in this policy. You can contact us at cs@globalman.co.uk.

2. Information the app uses

Location

If you tap the location button, the app asks for permission to use your location while the app is in use. On Android the app asks for the precise and approximate location permissions; you may allow either, or refuse. Your location is used to centre the map and search for crime around you. It is not stored by us, not tracked in the background, and you can turn it off at any time: on iPhone and iPad in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, and on Android in Settings › Location or Settings › Apps › UK Street Insight › Permissions. The app works fully without it — you can search by postcode, by latitude and longitude, or by moving the map to a point (and, on iPhone and iPad, by street name).

Searches

The postcodes, coordinates, streets and map areas you search are used to fetch crime data and to show maps (see section 3). Recent and saved searches are stored only on your device. On Android, postcodes in England and Wales are looked up from a postcode list bundled inside the app, without contacting any service.

Information stored on your device

The app keeps the following in its private storage on your iPhone, iPad or Android device:

We cannot see any of this. You can clear the cached data in Settings › Disk Usage, and deleting the app removes everything. If you use iCloud or iTunes device backups (iPhone and iPad), or Android’s backup to your Google Account, this data may be included in your backup under Apple’s or Google’s terms. If you share a PDF report, it goes only to the app you choose in the system share sheet.

3. Services the app uses

The app relies on the following third-party services. Each receives only what it needs to work, along with standard technical information such as your IP address. Which map service applies depends on your device.

ServiceWhat it receivesWhy
data.police.uk
(official UK police open data)
The coordinates of the area you search and the months selected. To download street-level crime, outcome and stop-and-search data. See the data.police.uk website.
Apple Maps (MapKit)
(iPhone and iPad only)
The map area being viewed, text you type into the search box, postcodes you look up, and locations shown in Look Around or map images in reports. To display maps, suggest and find addresses, convert postcodes to locations, and show street-level imagery. See Apple Maps & Privacy.
Google Maps SDK for Android
(Android only)
The map area being viewed and standard device and request information, such as your IP address. To display maps and the crime markers on them. See the Google Privacy Policy.
Android geocoding service
(Android only, provided by Google)
The coordinates of the centre of the map, so the app can show an approximate street name, and the text of a postcode that is not in the bundled list. To show a “Near …” street label under the map pin and to find postcodes that are not in the bundled list. See the Google Privacy Policy.

We do not use advertising or analytics services, and we do not embed any other third-party tracking in the app.

4. Legal bases (UK GDPR)

5. International transfers

Apple and Google may process information outside the UK, including in the United States. They are responsible for applying appropriate safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

6. How long information is kept

Information stored on your device remains until you delete it, clear the cache, or delete the app. Information held by Apple or Google is kept according to their own policies, linked above. We do not hold any of your personal data ourselves.

7. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the use of your personal data, and to data portability. Because we do not hold personal data about you, most requests are best directed to Apple or Google, but we are happy to help — contact us at cs@globalman.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

8. Crime data

Crime data shown in the app comes from data.police.uk and is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Locations are approximate and anonymised by the police before publication. The app does not provide information about identifiable individuals.

9. Children

The app is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. Because the app has no accounts and we hold no personal data, there is nothing for us to collect or delete.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the app changes. The effective date at the top shows when it was last updated. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
